Usually they are actually playing it, but they use special versions of emulators that allow them "redo" things using save states ... like say you are playing you can stop recording and go back to a previous save to do something over again faster

it makes fantastic videos, but usually its a lot of trial and error, I know someone told me the "redo" count on videos can be in the thousands for these speed runs!

Uneducated people spreading false information... Don't you EVER feel ashamed?.. I mean "dude ish" for example.

No video editing or cheat codes are used. You can get emulator, rom and file contaiing data on pressed buttons (and only pressed buttons) and replay that movie on your PC.

This movies are not made to show skills, at least not playing skills, they are not the point here. It demonstrates knowledge of the game and ability to use tools efficiently to make fastest movie possible when human limitations are removed. Is that too hard to understand? However it's expected to be written in comment to the video that this video is tool-assisted. It's one of rules of the site where people make such movies. Consder one who posted it on google videos if warning is not there, player is not the one to blame :p

Tool-assisted doesnt mean its cracked in some way. This replay demonstrates gameplay in case you were superman with perfect reactions and button ultra-press skill.

Example: pressing buttons in mid-frame by tool may raise your character velocity greatly, so thats why its called "tool-assisted".

Wow.
Although I'm impressed by the (skill) used in this video, I'm not conviced. Tool assited makes it phoney. Ad how the hell can you enjoy a game while going 500 k/h?
I bet he used slowdowns. Used some kind of turbo and other cheating mechanisms. This makes the movie a dud. Come on, he's had like 500 takes for one star. I know of some of those bugs but come on, completing the game like that would suck. I use save states often. So I don't have to repedetivly try to do something. Of course, it is a cheat I don't use it all the time. This person has clearly used save states.
And I know in speed runs people use different ROMs that give you advantages where in the real game they don't exist. I bet this video is used with an edited ROM.
You can awe at it, just don't think the person who made it is an honest one.

i noted that:
1) he used some type of autofire, the text was passing too fast, or maybe his fingers are incredibly fast?
2) Funny that he can use the long jump without running, and alas, his long jump go higher too.
3) OMG!!! incredible lucky cannon shot!!! maybe you should bet in the lottery.
4) There is a scene that you hit the air (the stars come out of nowhere) and do the wall jump, invisible wall?

He's not being dishonest or anything. Obviously he's not saying 'Look at meeEE! I completed this in sixteen minutes nyaah nyaah!' I think its pretty clear its simply a 'just for fun' video, nothing fakey or cheating about it. He takes advantage of numerous glitches to get through certain areas, and he makes use of various editing tools to give us one heckuva ride on the way....from now on our mustachioed hero will be known as 'Matrix Mario'. pissed about swim speed? it's all relative. it depends on how in sync your "a" presses are. considering it was done with tools, it imagine it hit "a" at the precise moment every time to get maximum speed.

Yes this is all in fun, and bravo to him, but if you aren't using your natural abilities (forget about the save states, I'm talking strictly about using the super-human-speed tools), you are cheating. If you are doing things that no human could possibly do because the human reaction time can never be that fast, you are cheating.

I used to have a controller with a rapid fire button that I would use while playing certain games, but I never considered it a fair game and myself a champion for beating the game if I used that button. I had to beat it with the original controller because, otherwise, it was cheating.

He records him beating each level perfectly one at a time and then edits them together. He clips the video together after he completes a star and comes back out of the painting. He just records him doing everything perfect once. It probably takes him 40 or 50 times to get one star level right. It is still impressive and extremely difficult. He found mant glitches in the game and uses them to his advantage. The rabbit through the door works.

Well....yeas.....I kinda....feeled goosebumps when I see it. Not about the glitches,but the daredevil parts(especially the bowser dungeons ones).Is almost impossible that he did everything alone without some sort of help,of course,but...this show us how a game could be if played in perfect hands.Mario 64 has a lot of glitches and bugs,so is very factible that someone could do one or more of the ones showed in the video. The matrix parts scared the hell outta me,because they are real played.Also,I can too make the superjumps without running more than once(is more,I can make crazy movements that the

Many people think, this is just made with emu version, but u can do all these thins without an emulator on the good old n64.
and u dont need any cheats , sharks or anythingelse just the old glitches and so on to make this.
a good friend of me is the second best atm in this speedrun^^.

nevermind.
i enjoyed the movie.
i ever love the bowser level.
i need e.g. 2 min just to go to his lair and you killed him in the same time. Good Speedrun
